I really believe once a dancer, always a dancer. The body may not be willing but all the things I’ve learned while dancing ballet for more than 10 years is still in my mind and in my heart. So, more than a month ago, I didn’t think twice when a former ballet classmate asked me to join a tribute concert for our ballet teacher they were organizing. I knew I was biting more than I could chew… dancing ballet again after 15 years?!!! I could feel my bones complaining.
But I really did have fond memories of my strict teacher, Ms. Amelia Garcia-Yulo, of Ballet Repertory Philippines. I remember always getting scolded for not “pointing my toes” or “turning out” enough or simply “pulling up”. If you danced, you’ll understand.
I definitely had fun with my classmates. Sharing the pain, sweat and tears during practices.
Last September 1, 2013, we held a tribute concert at Tanghalang Pasigueno. All she knew when she arrived there was that her current students were performing for a medical convention of some sort. But the whole concert was actually a hodge podge of all dances she choreographed through the years.
I joined 3 dances, including the finale. Sorry I didn’t give justice to the dance. Seriously needed a few more rehearsals. But I hope it was okay enough for her. Teehee…
It was a tribute to our teacher, but it has been weeks of reunion for the dancers. There were those more senior than me and then I met new ones I didn’t get to meet while dancing
I have to congratulate my classmates: Day, Nessa, Trina, Sunshine and Tweetie for organizing this tribute. Thank you and good job! Of course to Karylle and KitKit too. Everybody contributed in their own way, even those abroad!
(thank you to Karylle some of the photos!)
